The uneven settling of the ground can cause breaking of the layer and the creation of a preferential flow path which is initiated by the process of the formation and propagation of cracks caused by tensile stress. Tensile strength was determined for samples of: compacted fly ash and ash with 5, 10 or 15% addition of sodium bentonite, as well as for clay, for comparison. Tests were performed using the direct method (breaking) on cylindrical specimens. The effect of storage time on tensile strength was established. The obtained values of strain and tensile strength of compacted fly ash containing up to 5% bentonite, are similar to those obtained for the clay used in mineral sealing.
