The process of conservation of historic stone structures is a complex issue that requires a lot of research and analysis. One of the extremely important aspects is the risk of applying a substitute material to an existing one. This risk largely covers issues in the field of physico-chemical analysis, but also environmental or implementation compatibility. Therefore, we are talking here both about the parameters of the substitute material in relation to the stone one, such as chemical composition, mineralogical composition, porosity, strength parameters, etc., but also about the environmental conditions affecting the risk of carrying out conservation actions, the availability of materials and equipment or the level of training of the team local workers. All aspects will be presented in relation to the conservation of historic stone walls on an earth-based mortar, point values will be assigned to them with a description, and a way of determining the risk indicator for the use of substitute material will be presented. The algorithm will be used to determine the risk index for historic stone structures at the Tanais archaeological site.
