In order to protect surfaces of vertical external walls from moisture penetration sideways, the so-called wall ventilation galleries were very often used in the past. The main function of those elements was to make it possible for moisture to evaporate through external surfaces, which contributed to reducing moisture level and moisture rising by capillary action. The ventilation galleries functioned well provided there was adequate air-circulation around the protected walls and proper drainage of rainwater from the bottom. At present, while designing building renovation, wall ventilation galleries are liquidated and backfilled. If there are faults in the design and application of insulation, backfilling the gallery may bring adverse effects.
