Scaffoldings are a popular theme of construction health and safety research. As no direct information on the types, number, and sizes of scaffoldings used on Polish construction sites was available, the authors conduct in-situ observation in selected urban locations. Regular surveys were conducted over two years in, among others, Warsaw and five smaller cities and towns of Mazovia. The results were used for estimating the total number and total size of scaffoldings in each location, as well as their changes throughout the year. Moreover, the results provided qualitative information on types of scaffoldings, the works they serve, and visible deficiencies in their structure and equipment. Although the objective of this survey was to provide a scale for the assessment of scaffolding-related threats in terms of occupational safety, the results offer insight into the scaffolding market in Poland. Keywords: scaffolding; occupational health and safety; qualitative and quantitative assessment.
