Concrete-filled steel tubes in bridge truss structures

Concrete filled steel tubes are present in civil engineering since 20-th century. In recent years they have started being applied in bridge truss girders. Concrete fill significantly reduces sensitivity of steel tubes to local buckling, especially at nodes. Truss girders made of concrete-filled steel tubes have better load carrying capacity and flexural stiffness in comparison to similar girders made of steel tubes themselves. They are not exposed to failure due to local buckling of tube walls. Recorded failure modes are: plastification of the cord in tension, punching shear at the connection of bracing in tension and truss cord (crack propagates through the connection or through the cord in tension), buckling of bracing in compression. Occurrence of specific failure mode depends on individual parameters of the girders – members cross-sectional dimensions and bracing layout.
